The final pieces of Geelong’s new $10.1 million wave attenuator have recently arrived at Geelong Port after making the journey via ship from Ireland.  Upon completion, the wave attenuator which is a major feature of the $15 million Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour project, will be a publicly accessible 440m on-water walkway- one of the largest of this kind in Australia.

The wave attenuator works by “breaking” wind generated waves so their force is reduced to a much more workable level before reaching the marina.  In this way, it provides important safe harbour capacity allowing the operation of floating docks and the ability to berth large vessels such as tall ships.  This project is due to be completed in December, when the last three sections will be installed.

As reported in a media release from The Hon Alan Tudge MP, the wave attenuator would expand the waterfront precinct and attract new events that would help the local tourism industries recover from COVID-19.

AW Maritime has had an active role project managing the Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour project which involves the redevelopment of the Geelong Yacht Club and Victorian Sailing School into world class facilities, and the expansion of the existing marina including new wave protection structures.
