AW Maritime Pty Ltd (AWM) was engaged by Parks Victoria to assess the existing concrete pier at Portarlington in 2017. The original pier was constructed in the early 1970s and had been extensively used to support the commercial aquaculture industry . The pier had visible signs of deterioration including corrosion of steel reinforcement, spalling and delamination of concrete.
As part of the Portarlington Safe Harbour development this pier was ultimately demolished. However, in the interim, the pier was utilized as a pedestrian walkway and Parks Victoria sought to understand the influence of any defects on the load carrying capacity.
