South Wharf Berth 26, VIC

Condition inspection and remediation design of wharf

The berth at 26 South Wharf is used to import bulk products such as cement and gypsum which are critical to the Victorian construction market.

AW Maritime initially completed a comprehensive condition assessment of the structure in 2020-21 as part of Port of Melbourne’s Asset Management Program. The condition inspection included timber piles, concrete piles, beams, headstocks, capping beams, concrete soffits and decks. AWM provided a condition rating for each individual wharf assessment component number. AWM also provided an understanding of remediation works and potential timing.

AW Maritime were engaged in 2023-24 to assist Port of Melbourne with a site inspection, structural investigation of the wharf, sketches and recommendations for remediation. Following the recommendations, AWM were engaged to prepare a detailed remediation design. The design and documentation included targeted repairs including improvements to sheet pile walls via strengthening, stabilised sand fill, patch repairs and a new asphalt surface.
