Detailed design of new beacon and structural failure analysis
AW Maritime were engaged to design the new beacon after the failure of beacon no. 14 in the South Channel of Port Phillip Bay, Victoria. The design included drawings and specification including the nomination of pile embedment length. We were also involved in the construction phase supporting our client through contractor document reviews, site inspections and RFIs.
We also completed an analysis of the recovered beacon to assess the failure mechanism through destructive and non-destructive testing. As part of the assessment we also completed an assessment of structural utilization of the pile supports and checked the natural frequency of the beacon structure and resonance due to loading (predominantly wind).
