AW Maritime have been engaged to complete the detailed design of a selection of waterfront structures for the Sydney Fish Market redevelopment project.
The new Sydney Fish Market which will be built at the head of Blackwattle Bay, will transform an under-utilised area into a vibrant, accessible and attractive waterfront precinct. The design provides more than 4,700 square metres of new public open space, and paves the way for a future shared pedestrian and cycle path that will provide waterfront access all the way to Woolloomooloo. Designed by 3XN architects, the new Sydney Fish Market includes a distinctive wave-shaped and scale-patterned roof as well as a more visibly accessible auction area.
The new building will include new public promenades and a ferry wharf as well as a variety of fishmongers, restaurants, cafés, bars, and specialty food retailers in a four-storey market hall setting. The existing Sydney Fish Market is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere with visitor numbers to the market expected to double over the next 10 years, from three million to six million each year.
